Save the Netbooks declares victory after 48 hours, retires.

As there is little chance that the Petition to Cancel currently working its way through the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board will not be successful there's not much more for us to do here at Save the Netbooks but celebrate an early victory!

We'll be leaving the content generated for archival purposes, particularly for the plain english explanations of trademarks but most likely won't be making many updates from now on.

Thanks everyone for all the support both on and offline, in private and in public, and especially for Dell Computer who, after pulling a similar stunt over cloud computing last year are today's white knight.

I don't think you should give up/retire until Psion gives up on their Trademark claim. Just because Dell takes the ball, doesn't mean the game is over.

Please keep fighting.

I agree with the Star Wars fan. It ain't over until the fat lady sings. Dell could easily be silenced by Psion by them allowing Dell to use that term. That's why I say we need more netbook makers to join Dell. If Psion had to offer the use of that term to a bunch of companies - it would make their whole "fight" pointless.

As you can see from the flurry of posts, we're far from retired ;)

We're not at all worried about Dell's petition to cancel though... if nothing else the industry will continue business as usual for 6 months now so by the time it comes to being assessed there really will be no hope whatsoever.

I personally belive that Psion should win.

Ah, so I see that by the history on Wikipedia, you have basically pned the Netbook article. I call Bullshit. You obviously have a conflict of interest and should be barred from editing the Wikipedia article on the basis that you are biased. I'll report this fact to the relevant parties and make a comment on the discussion thread.

Wait, "I personally belive that Psion should win." followed 5 minutes later by "You obviously have a conflict of interest". Take your trolling somewhere else. Report it to whoever you like.

Why would you declare victory now? Psion did not drop their trademark registrations, did they? Don't be a coward!

Ralf, you don't suppose they have a trademark on Psion too?

Anyway here's some expert legal opinion on the subject that you ought to take a look at.

Of course they do. That's not the point. Trademarks and domains are totally different things... but NOT registering some corresponding domains clearly shows how negligent Psion was in protecting their trademark(s). It proves their marketing was - and still is - very much dormant.

That's an interesting point. The same could well be said for the "netbook" domain.

I'm sure if we all started refering to mobile phone handsets as iPhones (making it a generic term), Apple would have something to say on the matter. Surely Psion Teklogix are within their rights to do the same?

Welcome your thoughts...
